In an innovative collaboration, Racing to Zero is teaming up with researchers from the University of Toronto’s Climate Positive Energy to measure the carbon footprint of the 2025 Canada Games in St John’s, Newfoundland, to be held in August 2025.
Working closely together, and using Racing to Zero’s sport-specific emissions calculator, the team will produce a comprehensive GHG inventory, covering Scopes 1, 2, and 3. The key findings of this inventory will then guide the development of an implementable and consistent framework to comprehensively estimate scope 3 emissions and to assess emissions reduction strategies in the sports sector, specifically within the Canadian context.
Environmental sustainability has long been a priority for the Canada Games Council (CGC), and this project exemplifies this commitment. “At the Canada Games Council, our commitment extends beyond the realm of sports to prioritize the many positive social and environmental impacts of the Games,” says Gillian Orris, Senior Advisor, Sustainability and Impact, Canada Games Council.
This project is also another step forward for the CGC, who recently engaged Racing to Zero to measure their own emissions for the 2023 Fiscal Year, an important part of their UN Sports for Climate Action Framework commitments.
